This class will provide a toolkit for writing a successful book proposal, including identifying potential publishers, what editors look for, and how to avoid pitfalls in the process. Authors often take a scattershot approach when submitting proposals and manuscripts, when a much more deliberative and targeted approach is more likely to be successful. This course will help authors sort through the many options before them as they seek a publisher that fits their work. It will also give insights into the work of acquiring editors--especially those who publish nonfiction--as they consider submissions. Ideally, the course will culminate in workshopping students' proposals.

Joe Parsons grew up in a big family in Ohio, where books seemed to proliferate overnight, so it makes sense that after grad school, he would find his way to publishing—though not without a few detours along the way, including several years as a consultant and as a lecturer at Columbia College in Chicago. Most recently, he was a senior editor at the University of North Carolina Press.
