Multiperspectivity: n. a narrative technique by which the writer shows more than one perspective/narrator to the reader in order to complicate, enhance, expand, cross-check, distort, and/or clarify the story. In this class, we’ll tackle the art of integrating and intertwining multiple perspectives in our stories! We’ll read and discuss short-form pieces that demonstrate multiperspectivity. We’ll specifically analyze what multiple perspectives do for a story (and why we can’t achieve the same effect with only one perspective), and how to craft and knit perspectives together. These craft techniques are applicable for both short-form and long-form writing (ie, short stories and novels alike).Bring your half-baked story idea; your flimsy first draft; the chapter of your memoir that you just can’t get right—and a willingness to turn it on its head.
