Many writing courses emphasize rules, tips, and guidelines. Instead, this course will experiment in challenging some of those preconceived notions and inherited prescriptions while increasing our knowledge of conventions and traditions outside the mainstream. We will play with alternative constraints; question the purposes, forms, and audiences of our work; and reinvent the writing process. In this course we’ll engage in a wide variety of generative composition, both on and off the page, including cutting-edge creative writing in traditional genres such as fiction, poetry, drama, and creative nonfiction. However, we'll mostly engage in and explore work in emerging and "post-genre" modes such as hybrids, collage, erasures, visual writing, digital and new media, textual materials, performance, and more. We will seek to situate experimental writing traditions in relation to larger philosophical and contextual fields, such as emerging technologies, social justice movements, political engagement, and aesthetic practices. As experimental writing often requires an experimental community, we will likewise re-envision classroom and workshop pedagogy. Our inquiries will delve into new methods of generating texts, conducting research, performing analysis, collaborating, publishing, revising, and remediating texts.
