Every year, The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association honors the best work in speculative fiction at the Nebula Awards. In this class, we will focus on developing our own short fiction by critically reading the six Nebula finalists in the short story category. Each week, we will examine a different story through the lens of a focused literary element. Weekly topics will include story structure, setting and worldbuilding, point of view, character development, and dialogue, among others. We will end each class with a writing prompt based on that week’s story and craft element. Johnny Caputo is an active member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association (SFWA) and a voter for the Nebula Awards. His speculative fiction has appeared in Escape Pod, Mithila Review, Cast of Wonders, and other venues. When not writing, he spends his time teaching at various institutions and wandering the woods around Cleveland.
