This six-week generative writing course will explore contemporary poets, primarily in the Slam poetry community. Participants will interrogate both page poetry and video performances, as well as the fundamentals of spoken word performance. Participants will then be provided generative writing prompts to create their own poems to share out with the rest of the class. Participants will be expected to discuss sample poems presented and write first drafts (that explore their lives and the world around them through the written and spoken word), and bravely share out their work in a collaborative and inclusive space. The course will conclude with a virtual reading where participants can invite their family, friends, and community to witness their poetic prowess.
