You Aren’t Done Yet: On Revision (Poetry Revision - Summer 2025)

With:
Ali Black

Poets tend to celebrate after writing a poem. You shouldn’t. You aren’t done yet. Good poems take time to write, and real good poems take time to imagine, write, understand, release, refine and revise. If you haven’t taken your poems through a process of revision, you probably haven’t tapped the potential of creating a real good poem. Are you celebrating after you’ve written a poem? How do you know when you’re finished with a poem? How many versions of the poem did you write? What does revising a poem even mean? When I first started writing, I used to think revision didn’t matter until I took a class on revision. After the class, I learned that I loved revising my poems because it allowed for play, re-imagining and discovery. In this class, we will discuss the process of revision and how to go about re-visioning our poems. Students in this course should have at least three poems (old or new) to revise and bring to class. By the end, students will have a revision plan they can put into use.
