Workshop

You Are Here: Cultivating Your Nature and Ecological Writing

With:
Robin Beth Schaer

In this open-level and multi-genre workshop, we will take inspiration from our surroundings in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the new anthology You Are Here: Poetry in the Natural World edited by U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limon. We will read poetry and prose that explores the relationship between humans and nature and discuss how writing can reflect the mysteries of the natural world while advancing environmental awareness. Using several writing prompts and exercises, students will experiment with their own approaches to nature writing and leave with new material and a renewed connection to the natural world.

Instructor: Robin Beth Schaer is the author of the poetry collection Shipbreaking (Anhinga 2015). Her poems and essays have appeared in Tin House, Paris Review, and Guernica, among others. Her recent awards include an Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award and fellowships from Yaddo, MacDowell, and Vermont Studio. She has taught writing in New York, New Jersey, and Ohio, and she worked as a deckhand aboard the Tall Ship Bounty, a 180-foot ship lost in Hurricane Sandy.
