The young adult genre of fiction has grown tremendously in recent years. Works such as The Hunger Games, Twilight and The Hate U Give have taken readers by storm. This workshop is for those who want to explore writing for an adolescent audience. By examining short works by YA authors, we’ll consider what it means to truly capture the young adult experience, how to stay connected to the changing dynamics of adolescence, and how to draw readers in through craft elements such as plot, characterization and voice. Participants will leave with a short story or the first chapter of a novel.

Juliana Goodman was born and raised in Blue Island, Illinois. Juliana has received several awards and scholarships for her writing and was a 2014 Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Arts Award Finalist as well as a fellow with the Tulsa Artist Fellowship from 2019-2022. Her debut YA novel, The Black Girls Left Standing is a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection and a 2023 Edgar Award Nominee.
