Every Word Must Conjure is a multi-week generative writing workshop that dives into the differences between denotation and connotation in poetry.  Specifically, the importance of word choice in conveying not only meaning, but ideas and images, in an intentional way will be explored.  Emerging poets are encouraged to bring a piece in need of revision to each session, but may also choose to revise new poems generated during the workshop at each meeting.  Participants will have the chance to explore writing by contemporary poets of color, discussing the syntax and word choice of each.  Proposed poets include Willie Lee Kinard III, Mia S. Willis, Topaz Winters, and others exploring pop culture and current events through a historical lens.  Each workshop will include time to generate new work in response to a prompt along with the opportunity to share it with the group.  Suggestions for peer feedback will be offered in small and large group settings (i.e. break out rooms).  At the end of 6 weeks, poets can expect to have 6 edited poems that either are, or are very close to, final drafts.
