In The Shadows of This Cold, Cruel Town

Alvin Barnett

1.
In the shadows of this cold, cruel town,
I lay my head, where hope is drowned.
Childhood dreams turned to dust and rust,
In these alleys, I’ve learned to trust.

2.
Memories of pain, etched in my soul,
The bruises, the screams, taking their toll.
Lost in the cracks of society’s disdain,
I fight to survive, amidst the rain.

3.
Six years locked away, bars my only friend,
But freedom’s sweet taste, still just pretend.
For the chains of my past, they still bind tight,
In the darkness of my mind, they ignite.

4.
Every day’s a battle, against the tide,
As I wrestle with demons, deep inside.
But I’m still standing, against the odds,
In the war of life, where hope nods.

5.
Twice I’ve tried to end it all,
To silence the voices that call.
But something within me refuses to yield,
To the darkness that seeks to steal.

6.
A flicker of hope, a distant light,
Guiding me through the endless night.
For in my heart, I know it’s true,
There’s a chance for me, and for you.

7.
I reach out to those who share my pain,
Together we stand, in the pouring rain.
For in unity, there’s strength to find,
In the ties that bind, our hearts entwined.

8.
Each sunrise brings a new dawn,
A chance to rise, and carry on.
Though the scars may linger, and wounds may ache,
I’ll keep fighting, for my own sake.

9.
Through the eyes of a child, I see,
The world as it was meant to be.
And though the journey is long and steep,
I refuse to let my spirit sleep.

10.
With faith as my guide, I’ll forge ahead,
Through the trials, the tears, the dread.
For though the road may twist and turn,
In every lesson, there’s something to learn.

11.
I stand tall, against the wind,
A survivor, with scars to mend.
For love is the answer, the key,
To unlock the chains, and set me free.

12.
So here’s to the homeless man you see,
Still fighting, still trying to be.
For though the road may be dark and grim,
I’ll keep searching, until I win.

13.
The journey ahead may seem daunting and vast,
But with each step forward, I’m breaking free at last.
For in the depths of despair, I find my strength,
And in the face of adversity, I’ll go to any length.

14.
So let us walk this road together, hand in hand,
Through the trials and tribulations, we’ll make a stand.
For in unity, there’s power to be found,
And with love as our compass, we’ll always be bound.

15.
I refuse to let my past define who I am,
For I am more than the sum of my scars and sham.
With resilience as my shield, and courage as my sword,
I’ll march onward, towards a brighter reward.

16.
So lift me up, with words of kindness and grace,
As I navigate this tumultuous place.
For though the path may be rough and steep,
With love as my guide, I’ll journey deep.

17.
Here’s to the homeless man, resilient and strong,
May his spirit endure, may his hope prolong.
For in the face of adversity, he finds his way,
And with each passing day, he’ll rise and sway.
